Gateway Argentina views the health and safety of its' participants as serious. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, a member of the Gateway Argentina staff will meet with each new participant to give them an initial orientation of their neighborhood and place of residence. Following the initial orientation, there will be a group orientation that will extensively cover important aspects of health and safety while living in Buenos Aires. Each participant will receive city maps, contact numbers of reputable taxi companies and direct numbers of Gateway Argentina program coordinators to call in case of emergency.
The Gateway Argentina staff is prepared to assist each participant with any problem that may arise while part of the program. We are available to locate doctors, accompany participants to hospitals, police offices or embassies. We can also provide a translation service for any emergencies or problem that arises.
While it is not required we highly recommend that each participant visit their health care provider prior to departure to address any health concerns, get prescriptions for any medications they take regularly, and make sure they are up to date on all immunizations. While in Argentina it will be difficult to get access to any prescription medications that are taken regularly. We advise that you bring enough medication to cover the duration of your time in Argentina. Please be aware that you may be asked to see a copy of prescription or a doctor’s note while going through customs in Argentina. We recommend that you have this information.
Gateway Argentina requires that all students have health insurance with international coverage while in our programs. We also recommend that participants purchase travel insurance before the commencement of their trip. If you do not have health insurance we recommend Swiss Medical. Swiss Medical is Argentina’s premier provider of private health care. Swiss Medical operates with its own private walk-in clinics and hospitals. For more information regarding Swiss Medical please contact Aurora Couretot at acouretot@yahoo.com.ar . Upon confirmation of programs, we will require to see proof of insurance coverage. If you do decide to use Swiss Medical we will require proof of insurance coverage upon arriving in Buenos Aires.
No vaccinations are required to enter Argentina. However we do recommend prior to departure that you read up on vaccinations that are required or suggested for South America if you plan to travel outside of Buenos Aires. The most up-to-date vaccination data can be found on the Center for Disease Control website or by consulting a travel doctor. To view the website please click here: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/
For all questions, no matter how big or small that may arise for participants we are available 24/7. Please feel free to contact any Gateway Argentina staff member and we will accommodate you with whatever is needed. If the problem is too complicated for us the handle we will contact your foreign affairs representative in your respective embassy.
Gateway Argentina will do its best to accommodate any students disability. While it is not required, discussing your disability with our staff will improve the quality of your program. We are happy to assist you to make sure you get the most out of your time in Buenos Aires.
We require that all participants attend the program orientation. At this time we will give you an overview of the safety issues in the city of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is generally a safe city; however petty theft is common. We will advise you on how to adapt your wardrobe and habits to help prevent you from being a target of petty theft. We highly recommend that each participant registers with their respected embassy before arriving in Buenos Aires. It is important, in case of emergency, that embassy officials have an accurate list of nationals living abroad. It is also important that participant know where their embassy or consulate is located in case of emergency.
Gateway Argentina is fully committed to the safety of its participants. We pay very close attention to the social and political arenas in Argentina. If at any time embassy officials order that it is not safe for a national of that country to be in Argentina, we will help to organize their immediate departure. Our office will always be open and available for students to use in case of emergency abroad.
